Five Tips for Running With A Stroller

Guest Post By: Mom’s Little Running Buddy

If you’re reading this it’s probably because you have kids.  You are probably thinking about how to break out and make time for your run but feel somewhat trapped by the schedule you keep.  I get it.  I had my first little running buddy over 4 years ago.  One of my biggest fears was how was I going to get to continue doing the thing that I love, running, and still have time to be a parent, a career women and all the other necessary roles we play.

I knew back then that the only way to be successful was to have an assortment of tools, tips and tricks.  Since then, my now two running buddies and I have logged a lot of miles.  I respect all those runners out there who push, pull, walk or run with one of my most important tools…the stroller.

Backed by BOB Gear and Mizuno Running, National Stroller Running Day will be May 31st.  It’s a movement, a day to celebrate the extra mile, pun intended, stroller runners will go to hit the pavement.  You can be part of the movement in a variety of ways.  You can read about it on the official National Stroller Running Day site.   The easiest way is to make time anytime now through and on May 31st for a stroll with your little running buddies.  Snap a picture and post it to Instagram with the hashtag #StrollerRun15.  It’s easy, fun and will help introduce you to the community of dedicated runners.

You might be wondering how to get started stroller running.  In honor of National Stroller Running, I wanted to share my five tools, tips and tricks to a successful stroller run.

1.      Gear Up.  Let’s face it, stroller running is a little tougher than heading out solo but getting your hands on a good stroller like a BOB Ironman , will give you a better chance for success.  Don’t forget to lace up my favorite Mizuno Wave Prophecy.
2.      Plan.  My running buddies love the stroller, but they love their naps more.  Luckily for me, if I time my stroller runs during nap time, my kids get the best of both worlds.  What’s more relaxing than getting pushed around with the breeze in your face?!   Also plan for safety.  I recommend no earbuds when running with your kids.
3.      Find Your Form.  There are ways to save some energy during your run.  Try pushing with one arm and using the other to generate momentum.  See the form here.

4.      Be Flexible. Remember that anytime kids are involved, there’s always a chance things may not go as planned.  The last thing you want is a running buddy that hates the stroller so be aware of how they are doing.  If it’s not going well, be ok with cutting it short.
5.      Have Fun.  I like to end all my stroller runs with a little family race.  When we’re close to home and in a safe spot, I let them get their run on.  The look of joy on their face says it all.  They get excited about running and I get the joy of sharing my miles with them, after all, #MilesChangeYou.

Do I have you motivated?  Are you feeling inspired to get out there?  I hope so.  Make your next run a stroller run and make sure your next run is a #BrilliantRun
