Stay Warm in the Coldest of Weather

Well, Monday was Groundhog’s Day and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, meaning 6 more weeks of winter running.  Don’t groan, pout, hibernate, or purchase a treadmill just yet; Mizuno Breath Thermo is here to save the day!

I usually reserve Breath Thermo gear for runs when the temperatures are 45 degrees or under. It’s pretty much an outdoor runners saving grace in the winter. In fact, it’s my answer to the question, “ How do you train outside in this weather?”  When people set their New Years resolutions or register for a Spring marathon I always hope that their friends and family bought them Breath Thermo apparel for Christmas because this gear will increase the likelihood of a person sticking to their running routine.

IDSC_0493t can be tough to get out the door in the cold and dark, but if you dress correctly and arrange to at least start your run with a friend and you’ll be more likely to get out there and enjoy your run.  If you’ve fallen off your resolution or 2015 goals recommit with the help of some new gear.  I recommend a base layer Breath Thermo crew or ½ zip.  If you are like me and like your neck covered and protected from the wind or a cold draft, the ½ zip is really nice.  These are both sleek and fit the body nicely so that you don’t feel bulky and your body movements are natural. My black and shocking pink ½ zip is my go to for speed workout days and long runs.  It also allows you to unzip to get a little bit of air if you begin to get warm later in your run.  Pair these with the Breath Thermo jacket and you’ll own your run.

The body mapping Breath Thermo long sleeve is another of my favorite pieces. Its warmth, comfort, and lightweight feel are excellent. This shirt makes me feel good. I love the honeydew and shocking pink color (I’ve received many compliments on this shirt both on the trails and for everyday use).  You really just forget you have it on.  If it is really cold out this one tucks in nicely too to keep cold air out. The hoody version is like being in a speed skaters hood, protecting your ears.

Several weeks ago Lindsay, Maegan and I met for a run on a day that was single digits without the wind chill.  Schools were canceled due to the cold, but there we were on the forest trails, enjoying the stillness of the world around us as we ran.  Our eyelashes and nostrils grew icicles but our bodies were warm. It wasn’t until we stopped that we acknowledged that it was cold outside.  Breath Thermo from the socks on our feet to the headbands on our heads, with warm hearts and frozen smiles on our faces.  So, Groundhog Phil, we won’t be scared by your forecast because we Never Settle.
