Baseball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and taking care of my ball glove has always been important to me. My glove was always ready to be put into action at any moment. It is what I call my “Glove Love.”
It is many things from tightening the laces, fixing a blown lace, shaping and re-shaping the glove and most importantly the continuous oiling and conditioning of the glove. In my high school and college days, I was playing as many games each year as much as the pros. My glove needed constant attention. The laces would get stretched out or filled with dirt from repeats plays in the infield. The leather would also get dry and tight from the hot summer heat meaning a regular rotation of oil and conditioning was important.
The past two years I had the privilege to be a part of Mizuno Spring Training trip to professional camps across Florida. Joining the trips was, Shota Tanaka, a glove craftsman in the baseball glove development team in Haga, Japan. Watching Shota work his magic on hundreds of gloves, my passion for baseball glove care and the importance of it was reinforced. The attention given to every inch of the ball glove, from the custom lace colors to the glove pocket conditioning and shaping, is critical for a glove to be ready to play.
